This measure is designed to quickly characterize an individual’s predominant orientation in everyday behavior. The Bass Orientation Questionnaire is used to examine whether a person tends to prioritize self-focused concerns, task or goal demands, or interpersonal engagement. It is a brief, self-report instrument intended to support structured discussion of motivational focus in applied settings.
The questionnaire contains 27 items and typically takes about 5 minutes to complete. Items ask respondents to select options that best reflect their usual priorities or responses across common situations. Results are commonly interpreted across three broad orientation domains (self, task, and people), and may be used to inform team functioning, workplace interaction, and coaching or developmental feedback when integrated with other clinical or organizational information.
In available references, the Bass Orientation Questionnaire has been attributed to Russell A. Barkley. Scores should be interpreted within the context of the respondent’s background and the assessment purpose, and not as a standalone indicator of clinical diagnosis.
