This self-report measure evaluates perceived metacognitive behaviors related to monitoring and regulating one’s thinking during learning or complex problem-solving. The Metacognitive Behavior Self-Assessment Scale provides a brief snapshot of how individuals appraise their use of strategies such as planning, self-monitoring, and reflective adjustment.
The instrument includes 12 items and typically takes about 3 minutes to complete. Adrian Wells is cited as the author.
Results are commonly interpreted descriptively to identify relative strengths and areas for further assessment or skill development, and to support clinical or educational case formulation when metacognitive factors are relevant. The Metacognitive Behavior Self-Assessment Scale is not, by itself, diagnostic and should be considered alongside other clinical information, including presenting concerns, functional impairment, and corroborating measures.
