This measure assesses a patient’s perceived trust in their treating clinician and the extent to which the clinician is viewed as competent, caring, and acting in the patient’s best interests. The Trust in Physician Scale (TPS) is commonly used in clinical and health services research to quantify the relational component of care.
Developed by Debra L. Roter and John B. Hall, it consists of 11 items and typically requires about 3 minutes to complete. Items are presented as brief statements that respondents rate to indicate their level of agreement.
Scores from the Trust in Physician Scale (TPS) may be used to characterize the patient–physician relationship, support evaluation of communication quality, and inform studies of factors associated with treatment adherence and patient engagement.
