This brief self-report measure evaluates perceived difficulty level when approaching problem-solving in educational contexts. The Problem-Solving in Educational Situations Difficulty Level Assessment is intended to characterize how respondents appraise and engage with pedagogical problem situations.
The instrument includes 26 items and typically requires about 5 minutes to complete. Items are phrased to support rapid administration and to elicit a respondent’s dominant approach to analyzing and responding to educational challenges.
Results can be used to inform professional development discussions, reflective practice, and training needs by indicating whether an individual tends to engage with complex, underlying issues versus more surface-level solutions. Authorship is attributed to John D. Bransford and Robert J. Sternberg. Interpretation of the Problem-Solving in Educational Situations Difficulty Level Assessment should consider the specific educational setting and the respondent’s role and experience.
