This brief self-report measure assesses affective evaluation and clarity of one’s ethnic identity. The Assessment of Positivity and Uncertainty of Ethnic Identity is intended to support rapid screening of positive feelings toward group membership and perceived uncertainty or ambiguity about that identification.
The instrument includes 8 items and typically requires about 2 minutes to complete. Responses can help characterize emotional valence (e.g., pride, comfort) and the degree of definition or commitment in ethnic self-identification, which may be relevant in clinical intake, multicultural case formulation, or research contexts. Development is attributed to Jean S. Phinney and John W. Berry.
Results from the Assessment of Positivity and Uncertainty of Ethnic Identity should be interpreted in the context of the individual’s cultural background and current stressors, and used alongside other clinical information rather than as a stand-alone indicator.
