Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale for Compulsive Buying, YBOCS-SV Test - the question form

1. Time occupied by thoughts about shopping. How much time do you spend having thoughts about shopping?
None.
Mild; less than 1 hour a day, or occasional.
Moderate; 1–3 hours a day, or frequent urges.
Severe; 3–8 hours a day, or very frequent urges.
Extreme; more than 8 hours a day, or nearly constant preoccupation.
2. Interference from thoughts about shopping. To what extent do your thoughts about shopping interfere with your social, work, or role functioning? Is there anything you do not do because of them?
None.
Mild: slight interference with social or work activities, but overall performance is not impaired.
Moderate: definite interference with social or work activities, but performance is still manageable.
Severe: causes substantial impairment in social or occupational functioning.
Extreme: incapacitating.
3. Distress associated with shopping thoughts. How much do thoughts about shopping distress you?
None.
Mild: not too distressing.
Moderate: distressing but still under control.
Severe: very distressing.
Extreme, almost constant and disabling distress.
4. Resistance to thoughts about shopping. How much effort do you make to resist thoughts about shopping? How often do you try to ignore them or shift your attention away from these thoughts when they enter your mind?
Always make an effort to resist, or the symptoms are so minimal that no resistance is necessary.

No control: the thoughts are completely involuntary; I can rarely change my shopping-related thoughts even for a moment.

Severe: a marked and very distracting increase in anxiety if shopping is interrupted.
Extreme, incapacitating anxiety from any interference aimed at changing the behavior, or incapacitating anxiety develops while shopping.
9. Resistance to compulsive shopping: How much effort do you make to resist the urge?
I always make an effort to resist, or the symptoms are so minimal that resistance is not needed.
I try to resist most of the time.
I make some effort to resist.
I give in to almost all urges without trying to control them, but I do so with some resistance.
I completely and involuntarily give in to almost all urges.
10. Control over compulsive shopping urges. How strong is the urge to shop? How much control do you have over the urge?
Complete control.
High control: I feel pressure to perform certain actions, but I can usually exert voluntary control over it.
Moderate control: strong pressure to perform certain actions, controlled only with effort.
Low control: a very strong urge to perform certain actions that feels it must be carried out and can be resisted only with extreme effort.
No control. The urge is experienced as completely involuntary and irresistible; I can rarely even delay acting on it briefly.
