This measure assesses perceived role conflict and related internal tension as women adapt to pregnancy and early motherhood. Women’s Role Conflict During the Transition to Motherhood is intended to capture the degree to which emerging maternal expectations may compete with other salient roles and values in daily life.
The instrument includes 21 items and typically takes about 4 minutes to complete. Items ask respondents to indicate their level of agreement with statements reflecting potential incompatibilities among roles (e.g., partner, employee, family member) and anticipated maternal responsibilities; scores are used to inform clinical formulation or research on adjustment during the transition to motherhood. Women’s Role Conflict During the Transition to Motherhood is attributed to Alice H. Eagly and Sandra L. Bem.
