This measure assesses how an individual manages interpersonal psychological distance and regulates access to personal thoughts, feelings, and private experience. Ego Boundaries is intended to provide a brief snapshot of perceived openness versus protectiveness in everyday interactions, with potential relevance to relationship functioning and emotional self-protection.
The instrument consists of 30 items and typically takes about 6 minutes to complete. Items ask respondents to rate reactions in situations where personal space, emotions, or autonomy may be influenced by others, supporting a structured discussion of boundary setting and boundary violations.
In clinical and counseling contexts, Ego Boundaries may be used to inform case conceptualization when difficulties involve interpersonal stress, vulnerability, or emotional withdrawal. Results should be interpreted in context and integrated with interview findings and other assessment data rather than used as a stand-alone indicator.
