Assessment of adolescents’ attitudes toward the natural world can inform educational and psychosocial planning. The Naturaphil Questionnaire is a self-report measure designed to characterize how strongly and in what ways youth relate to nature (Kellert & Hines).
The instrument consists of 50 items and typically takes about 10 minutes to complete. It is intended for use with ages 10–17 and yields scores across multiple domains, including perceptual-affective responsiveness, cognitive interest and knowledge, practical engagement, and behavioral expression; an additional index addresses naturalist knowledge.
Results from the Naturaphil Questionnaire may be used to describe individual or group patterns of nature-related attitudes and engagement, supporting formulation of developmentally appropriate interventions, environmental education efforts, and program evaluation. Interpretation should consider the assessment context, response style, and relevant developmental and cultural factors.
