This brief self-report measure assesses individual differences in dispositional forgiveness and attitudes toward forgiving others. Forgiveness Tendency and Attitudes Toward Forgiveness is intended to capture how respondents typically evaluate and respond to interpersonal transgressions in terms of willingness to forgive.
The instrument includes 10 items and typically takes about 2 minutes to complete. Items ask respondents to endorse statements reflecting their general stance toward forgiveness and their tendency to let go of resentment; responses can support clinical formulation and treatment planning when considered alongside other assessment data and the client’s cultural and situational context. It was developed by Everett L. Worthington Jr. and Michael E. McCullough.
In practice, Forgiveness Tendency and Attitudes Toward Forgiveness may be used to inform case conceptualization in contexts involving interpersonal conflict, relationship strain, or persistent anger and hurt. It can also be used to monitor perceived change over time during interventions that target emotion regulation, empathy, and reconciliation-related processes.
